Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 16 delivers improved security, reliability, and compatibility by updating Java SE 6. My Mac currently is running Snow Leopard (10.6.8), and I would like to develop with Java 7. I downloaded the Java 7 OS X installer from Oracle's website, started to run it. Unfortunately, I was immediately greeted with a message that said the installer is supported only on OS X Lion (10.7.3). I'm trying to download the Java SDK and install Eclipse, but I cannot find compatible versions for my operating system. I'm new to this and oracle's website is confusing. I have a Mac with OS Snow Leopard (10.6.8). I want to develop with JDK 7 but Oracle's website says JDK need OS 10.7.3 and later. So I followed some questions and answers on a similar topic here on Stackoverflow and found the following answer (by @larsac), using Pacifist to install JDK 7. Java for OS X is an Apple vetted Java environment, designed to be as highly integrated as possible within its own operating system. Java for OS X has been created to mix OS X's advanced technologies and Java's adaptability and omnipresence on almost all software platforms out there.

This 'update' is clearly a step behind and only brings more problems than it solves.

Summary

I highly recommend to those considering this upgrade to stop now, enjoy the version you have, and stay away from Lion as far as you can. It is a complete can of worms and the benefits are hardly, if possible, to find anywhere. In fact, can anyone name a single benefit of this operating system upgrade? I've yet to find a single one..

Lion does multiple desktops very well, and full-screen mode. But as a development machine it is terrible; they swapped out gcc for some semi-proprietary compiler which failed for many installs, made postgresSQL the default database which isn't so bad but there are configuration issues. It's been awhile so I can't remember the other reasons I decided to never use Lion again, but they're out there.

Pros

Apple's newest version is closer to the Java standard used by other platforms.

Cons

Problems with automatic update can be difficult to diagnose. (I set the product rating to 3 stars only because I was required to select a rating; I would have preferred not to rate it.)

Summary

On some machines, Apple's automatic update leaves an older version of Java running in tandem with the updated version, causing NeoOffice to crash upon startup. Fix/workaround: Open the utility Java Preferences.app and uncheck, or turn off, the obsolete versions in the General pane; leave the newest version turned on. In the one case that I saw, the two entries for the new Java version, both 64-bit and 32-bit, were marked '(System)', the older ones were not.
